In that long, suspended pocket of time, those ancient eyes seemed to look past my heavy coat, past my city fatigue, and straight into the quietest, most bruised part of my soul. He didn’t ask anything of me. He didn’t judge. He simply allowed me to stand there in the mist and share his solitude. And for the first time in years, the knot in my chest loosened. I felt seen, not by a person, but by the wild.
The wilderness had recognized me, and in doing so, it gave me back to myself.
